I don’t have active social media accounts. After reading Jaron Lanier’s book Ten Argument for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now, I’m happy that social media doesn’t appeal to me.
Social Media platforms – most, not all – encourage behavioral modification.
We are being manipulated. The platforms and the organizations seeking to change people’s behavior benefit the most from these platforms.
Any personal benefit I think I get from social media can be replaced with less aggressive forms of media.
Most importantly, I am concerned about our ability to empathize and communicate with others.
Social media is a race to the bottom. Drama rises to the top of the feed to keep us glued to the feed – we are presented curated feeds to maximize our time on site and optimize the advertising revenue of the platform.
Every minute spent on social media is one less minute we can live in the real world, one that presents and nurtures richer experiences.
Social media makes us unhappy.
Social media makes our communication meaningless.
And it does not work in our best interest.
